Darlington Railway Museum

Experience the atmosphere of the steam railway age and Stephenson's Locomotion. Step back in time! Darlington Railway Centre is a symbol of Darlington's history as the 'birthplace of railways'.

'Locomotion' National Railway Museum, Shildon

'Locomotion' National Railway Museum at Shildon is an £11million, award winning attraction that is easily accessed by train, car or bus. Admission is generally free for all visitors, although a fee may be charged during certain special events.

Beamish Museum

See the past come to life. What do we really know about the past? Pictures, books and websites merely skim the surface of what it was like to live 100 or 200 years ago. Wouldn't it be far better to experience it for yourself, to actually visit the past to hear, smell and taste it.

Saltburn

Saltburn is a seaside resort about 12 miles east of Middlesbrough and is easily accessed by train, bus and car. Its attractions include a recently renovated pier, plenty of Victorian buildings, a valley garden and a smugglers' museum, as well as one of the world's oldest water-powered cliff lifts.

Whitby

The historic coastal town of Whitby is situated 47 miles from York at the mouth of the River Esk and is famous for its association with James Cook and featured in Bram Stoker's 'Dracula'. The town was awarded 'Best Seaside Resort 2006' by 'Which? Holiday' magazine.

Durham

Known for its Norman cathedral and castle and as the home of one of Engalnd's most prestigious universities, Durham contains over 600 listed buildings. The whole of Durham city centre is a designated conservation area. Durham is easily reached by train and car.

Newcastle & Gateshead

Newcastle & Gateshead offer a vibrant alternative to other places of interest in the North East. The home of the internationally renowned Baltic Centre for Contemprary Art and the Sage Gateshead music centre. Newcastle is easily accessed by train and Gateshead accessible via the Newcastle Metro.

York

Explore and discover the exciting world of retail therapy at MetroCentre, where you can find a whole host of small unique shops in themed areas alongside popular high street names.

Day Trips

Steep yourself in history by visiting the castles at Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and inland at Alnwick. Or tread in the footsteps of the Romans at Hadrians Wall to the west of Newcastle.

On Holy Island is the castle and Lindisfarne Priory, visited centuries ago by St Cuthbert.

A little further north is the Scottish Border about 90 minutes drive by car or by train to Berwick.
